True-False Test Items

Example:
The official language of Togo is English.
___  True
___  False

  • Test important content and avoid trivial statements.
  • Avoid lifting statements from books or lectures that can be answered by simple memorization.
  • Provide sufficient information in the statement to allow students to respond correctly.
  • Express a single idea in each statement.
  • Express the statement as simply and clearly as possible.
  • True-false items containing modifiers such as usually, seldom, and often are frequently true, whereas statements containing words such as never, always, and every are most likely to be false.
  • Avoid using negatively worded statements.
  • False items tend to discriminate more highly than true items, therefore use more false items than true items.
