
The UCSB Department of History website has a Resources link to Online Image Resources. This site offers annotated links to variety of image resources useful for instruction across all disciplines and departments. The VRC blog “The Red Dot" contains regular updates on collection news and new image sites.
The Visual Resources Collection online image database (MDID):
• Request account from Jackie Spafford (or request link on log-in page)
• The collection contains 30,000 digital images – a collection mainly built on teaching requests
• MDID allows instructors to save, download, organize, share and present images
• Personal images can be uploaded and accessed through MDID (requires instructor privileges)
• MDID has a wiki with lots of helpful tutorials and FAQs.
ARTstor is a digital library of more than one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes.
- Self register for a regular account, or request instructor privileges from Jackie Spafford.
• No log-in is needed when using ARTstor on a campus computer – search and download functions will
work; log-in required for home (proxy) use
• You must log in on campus at least once every 120 days to ‘refresh’ the account
• Instructor privileges allow the user to save image groups, upload personal images, and access/use the Offline Image Viewer (OIV)
• Features to try out: Browse, Simple Search, Advanced Search, associated image groups, image
clusters, AIP, download images (details), saving image groups, QTVR, 3D, save/export citations,
downloading to PowerPoint, personal collections
• ARTstor has excellent Help resources.
ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV)
• to download: log in to ARTstor, go to Tools, Download OIV (requires Instructor privileges)
• behaves like PowerPoint but with added features: image palette for organizing images, drag and drop
images and captions, image zoom
UC Shared Images (UCSI)
• Institutional collections - a collaboration of all UC campuses and the California Digital Library
• hosted by ARTstor – access can be restricted by campus or made available system-wide
• goals: to share our resources, reduce overlap and redundancy
Gauchospace and Images
• images can be linked from MDID or ARTstor in a variety of ways: hard URLs to individual images or
groups, Slideshows, flashcards/PDFs, read-only PowerPoints, etc.
Contributing/Sharing/Storing your images
• The VRC can offer hosting services to orphan collections, e.g. field slides – we can make them
accessible with others through MDID and ensure safe image file storage and backup (required:
documentation to accompany images)
